There’s a lot of talk about “mental health” these days — but what does it actually mean?
Truth be told, the concept of mental health (and mental healthcare, for that matter) is something of a paradox. After all, a person’s psychological state is often determined by the biased, subjective observation of others. This includes clinical practitioners who spend a concerningly brief amount of time with their clients (typically 50 minutes per week) yet rely on trust and connection to diagnose and ameliorate a person's psychological suffering. Needless to say, this woefully perilous process has become part of the problem.
At the very least, proper assessment a person's "mental health" must take into account their neurological, hormonal, sensory, psychospiritual, behavioral, and cognitive functioning. Add to that the complexity of life — and the countless ways that it shapes our inner and outer worlds — and one could argue that sanity is more of a living phenomenon then the personification of mental stability. Nevertheless, in a society that's become unduly standardized and stringent, we've come to revere tranquility as synonymous with virtue. This ideology has left the vast majority of us chasing our own tail, only to become even more disoriented and exhausted.
According to a comprehensive research study conducted by Mental Health America... nearly a hundred million people that live in the U.S. are currently experiencing psychological distress symptoms so severe that they meet the diagnostic criteria for mental illness.
Nearly 1 in 5 American adults are diagnosed with a mental health condition each year.
46% of the US population will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their life.
And nearly half of that 46% will develop conditions by the AGE OF14!
At The Mental Wellness Movement, we're committed to providing empathetic, equitable, and embodied care grounded in practical application. This begins by fostering a culture of compassion and collaboration - where clients feel a sense of solidarity and safety knowing that their humanistic needs can be honored and tended to with care. In fact, by extending a helping hand in a world that's often demeaning, isolating, and downright destructive to the human spirit, we initiate a corrective emotional experience that can be powerful enough for the mind, body, and spirit to begin healing itself.
To kickstart this process, we use philosophical inquiry and non-clinical assessment tools to help decipher to the client's intrinsic needs and interests. From there, we work with the client to establish a collaborative care plan and personal support network or practitioners and allies to help care for their mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. This comprehensive process not only inspires organic and sustainable healing but also strengthens the client's inner resolve by teaching them the skills to become a self-healer.
