According to a comprehensive research study conducted by Mental Health America... nearly a hundred million people that live in the U.S. are currently experiencing psychological distress symptoms so severe that they meet the diagnostic criteria for mental illness.
Nearly 1 in 5 American adults are diagnosed with a mental health condition each year.
46% of the US population will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their life.
And nearly half of that 46% will develop conditions by the AGE OF14!

There’s a lot of talk about “mental health” these days
— but what does it actually mean?
Let's face it, the concept of mental health (and mental healthcare, for that matter) is something of a paradox. After all, determining a person's psychological state typically hinges on the biased perspectives of others. This includes clinical practitioners who spend a concerningly brief amount of time with their clients (typically 50 mins per week) yet rely on mutual trust, meaningful connection, and inadequate observation to not only accurately diagnose but also affectively treat individuals suffering from psychological distress. Needless to say, this woefully perilous process is not only insufficient, it has become part of the problem.
At the very least, proper assessment of a person's "mental health" should take into account their neurological functioning, intellectual capacity, developmental milestones, trauma history, genetic predispositions, cultural influences, learned behaviors, ingrained belief systems, nervous system functioning, hormone levels, gut health, and environmental factors. Add to that the ever-changing complexities that accompany everyday life -including the aging process, one's economic status, personal relationships, and access to support systems- and one could argue that the concept of sanity is more of a living phenomenon than it is "soundness of mind" (Webster's Dictionary). After all, if life itself hasn't made each one of us a little crazy, are we even paying attention?!
Nevertheless, in a society that prizes conformity and grows more divided by the day, it’s no surprise that we continue to mistake emotional suppression for strength. But this belief comes at a cost. It pushes people to doubt themselves and label others, referencing completely normal reactions to relentless stress — such as moodiness, disorientation, and exhaustion — as signs of personal weakness or illness. However, these reactions aren’t failures. They’re simply human responses to a culture that demands endurance while offering little room for honesty or rest.
